Critique: Great Lakes Futurity

What an absolutely beautiful day in June! The sun smiled down from a virtually cloudless sky and the temperature was a balmy seventy five degrees. A light breeze wafted over a large ring that featured a white building on the long side, a perfect backdrop to showcase some really fine German Shepherds. The quality in males and especially in bitches was very deep and certainly in some of the classes I wished that I could have given more than four plaques. The temperament was very good with only a small number of animals exhibiting a lack of confidence on the loose lead test. There were no missing teeth, a few level bites and, for most medium to dark eyes.

Before I begin my critique, I must compliment the German Shepherd Dog Club of Toledo for very enjoyable day. The club members were all so efficient, attentive and friendly. Show Chairwoman Peg Phillips and Show Secretary Linda Hall worked tirelessly and seemed to be everywhere to insure a successful show and to make me feel welcome. I would especially like to thank Chief Ring Steward Pam McElheney and Steward Sue Wylie for keeping ring procedures moving quickly and efficiently. What a terrific job these girls do; no wonder the club requests their stewarding expertise for their shows. These girls anticipated my every need - before I voiced it. Photographer, Eric Levin, never stopped smiling; he is a most pleasant and patient young man. I also want to thank the club again for the lovely judge’s gift - a lime green director’s chair, embroidered with a German Shepherd in flying gait, blue ribbon, paw prints and my kennel name. What a special gift! The decorative work was completed by Sally Hayden; boy does that lady have some real talent.

I would also like to thank all of the exhibitors for entrusting me with the honor of evaluating the fine German Shepherds presented to me. I was humbled by your confidence in my judgment and the warm comments extended by many of you. And the handlers, I have the utmost respect for your ability and professionalism. All exhibitors need to experience the effort you take in presenting their dogs - from a judge’s perspective inside the ring.

Finally video man Bob Lindsay and his secretary - wife - Sandy, words can not express how grateful I am. Bob and Sandy graciously offered to accompany us for a mini-vacation in Ohio. Anyone in the German Shepherd community realizes what a fantastic job Bob does in his videos. Every dog is given equal time on Bob’s tapes and his work serves both as a visual memoir of good performances and a learning tool for breeders and exhibitors alike. I was especially thankful that Bob was there since my new, smaller tape recorder malfunctioned. Let me tell you this is one of Bob’s best tapes! And Sandy, here is a woman who thinks of everything. She assumed the role of my personal assistant and came armed with a pouch of sundries to meet any need. Thank you both so very much.

Again thank you to all the members of the German Shepherd Dog Club of Toledo for inviting me to judge your show. Best Wishes to all the winners at the National!!!

Now on to my critique:

Futurity

German Shepherd Dogs, Futurity - Junior Class

1st & Reserve Best In Futurity Male

CRESTHAVEN’S THE INTIMIDATOR - This young man was a standout in a very nice class of junior dogs. Standing or in motion this boy gives a beautiful outline and possesses a beautiful black coat that really shines with health. He has a very dark almond eye, a nice ear set and a very well chiseled headpiece that flows into a long neck, back and croup. This handsome boy moves smoothly and effortlessly on a loose lead and indeed does not need to race around the ring to look good. He is as extreme as I would like, however, he is very clean on both ends and commands attention when in motion or at rest. Although I found him to be a bit longer than I would like, this youngster’s back remains strong without any unnecessary motion over the loin. He was presented well, never took a wrong step and has a powerful, ground covering stride. He will have a promising show career.

2nd HEI-KOB’S NATIONAL GUARD - This young boy appeared a bit leggy and immature at this time primarily because of age and he was fairly out of coat. He too is a very handsome male. His coat is a rich black and tan; he is clean both coming and going, has a dark eye and nice head. This boy is a balanced mover, has a strong back and moves well on a loose lead. He tends to lift in the rear on a tight lead. With maturity and depth of body to displace that adolescent leggy look, this boy will be a real contender.

3rd MUSTWYN’S WITCH DOCTOR - This medium size boy has a beautiful curvy body that has excellent bone and substance. He too is a effortless mover who is clean both coming and going. He has a richly pigmented coat in very good condition, a lovely dark eye and correct bite. He is lower stationed, deeper in body and more mature looking than my second place male. He was however, not as ring trained and tended to be a bit rammy at times which created a bit of a break in his back that was not evident on a loose lead.

4th WHITSIDE’S DIAMOND RIO - This medium size, black and tan male actually looked the most mature in the class. He has good bone and substance and is balanced in motion. He possesses a strong back and is clean both coming and going. I would prefer a darker eye. He tends to move low to the ground when in control. He would benefit from training.

German Shepherd Dogs, Futurity - Teenage Class, Dogs

1st T-HO’S CHARM’-BEAR-BRAGG V MUGS - This is a very promising young boy of good bone and substance. He has a well defined prosternum and nice outline. A richly pigmented black and tan, this boy has a nice open shoulder and moves smoothly on a loose lead. He does, however, tend to distort his topline over the rear when on a tight lead. He has a nice headpiece with good expression and sex characteristics. I would prefer a smoother croup and better tail set. He is an efficient mover and clean on both ends. He has a good temperament and was the most consistent mover in the class.

2nd KRIDLER’S HEATHBAR-V-SIGNATURE - This medium size boy is an exuberant youngster who showed better as the class progressed. He is higher withered than my first place dog and has good rear drive , but I would have liked a bit more shoulder. He has a dark eye, good bite and nice headpiece. He is not quite as clean as the dog in front of him, but holds a good topline in motion.

3rd SUTANA’S TUG MCGRAW OF JADA - Lower stationed than the first two placing in this class, this young man gives a beautiful outline when standing, but tends to break a bit in the back on a tight lead. He is richly pigmented and has a lovely headpiece with a beautiful dark eye. He moves close to the ground, but has more rear drive than front reach. I found him a bit straight in front. He moves much most efficiently on a loose lead.

4th WILLAWAY’S STONE MOUNTAIN - This boy had the most substance and size in this class. He is efficient and balanced in motion. He keeps a good topline and opens well on both ends. He is very masculine with excellent sex characteristics and will be a real nice boy when fully matured.

German Shepherd Dogs, Futurity - Intermediate Class, Dogs

1st SCHNEIDERHOF’S DAREDEVIL - The very richly pigmented black and red young boy did not take a wrong step in this class and gave an extremely consistent performance. He is an exuberant mover who radiates masculinity. His head is large and again masculine. He possesses a very dark eye, good bite and excellent ear set. He is a large dog with excellent bone, good forehand and tremendous rear drive. He is clean coming and going. Consistency in performance and masculinity made him an easy winner in this class. I did find him to be a bit long, however, and this made the difference in the finals.

2nd CLOVERLEIFE’S FOURTH OF JULY - Another very nice moving dog, probably more efficient in motion than the first place boy, but less consistent in performance, not quite as masculine, but shorter in back. He too possesses a dark eye and good bite. He is very balanced, open on both ends and is clean coming and going. He did not hold the topline that the first place dog presented, but is lovely in motion and will have a promising show career.

3rd EKO-LAN EJM’s ATHOS - This boy has all the correct parts, but has not yet learned about the show ring. I was very impressed with him standing, but he did not have the exuberance of the boys in front of him. He too has a dark almond eye, nice ear set and good bite. He has a nice topline and is clean on both ends. His pigment is rich and he is a medium size dog. He will be a good one once he learns what is expected of him.

4th STONECROFT’S ADONAI OF AVALON - This is a pleasant young boy with a very outgoing personality. He has a dark eye and good bite. He is rich in pigment, but lacks angulation, reach and drive.

German Shepherd Dogs, Futurity - Senior Class, Dogs

1st & Best In Futurity
BRAUNHAUS SAMURAI - When this boy entered the ring, I felt my heart jump and skip a beat; I could not take my eyes off of him. For me, this dog has it all; he is a real showdog - type, presence, motion and showmanship all in one really beautiful dog. Great temperament, beautiful topline, nice prosternum , open shoulder, powerful front and rear extension, strong back, clean coming and going, dark eye, good bite, excellent sex characteristics are all words to describe him. Shown on a tight or loose lead, he never took a bad step either in the class or in winners. He is richly pigmented and gives the impression of power and elegance both standing and in motion. A large dog, he will be a real stallion at maturity. If I want to be really picky, I can mention that he keeps his ears very erect when at attention, but tends to tilt them a bit to the sides when not completely alert. Now that is picky! I venture to predict that this boy will go on to be high select and a great one in the future. Imagine my surprise when I learned later that this was his first time in the show ring!

2nd KEYLIS YELLOW JACKET - This is another really nice boy, a medium sized black and tan with nice extension both front and rear. He is clean coming, but could be a bit better going. He performs consistently. He has a nice head piece with good bite, almond eye and a nice ear set. He has a tendency to move a bit over the loin especially on a tight lead and I prefer to see him shown on a loose lead. His tail set could be a bit smoother, but he moves well when he hits his stride. He is a nice one who should finish easily.

3rd TODOR MARQUIS BROKEN ARROW - This big boy has good front and rear extension but seemed to lose some enthusiasm as the class progressed. He is clean on both ends. He presents a lovely outline standing. When moving, he is a bit level in topline, but has a strong back. He has a nice headpiece and gives the overall impression of power and substance.

4th DEPAHL’S BONADVENTURE - This is a handsome black and reddish tan young man with good sex characteristics. A medium size dog he presents a very pleasant outline standing or in motion. This boy is an efficient mover and is nicely balanced. His dark black coat is rich and glossy. He has dark eyes and a good bite. His right ear is weak and tilts in towards his head. Although a bit distracting, his ear does not diminish the quality of this youngster.

German Shepherd Dogs, Futurity, Junior Class - Bitches

1st ISABEL OF FRAN-JO ANNE ISLE - This young lady moves with the power and coordination of a true athlete. She possesses excellent bone and substance for such a young girl. When in motion, her head is thrust slightly forward and her whole outline moves fluidly from front to rear. She has a lovely croup that flows into a saber tail. This girl extends on both ends; she has a beautiful shoulder and excellent rear drive. Her pigment is a rich reddish blonde and black; her coat healthy and glossy. She has a nice almond eye and a good bite. She was endowed with a good size pair of ears that are very erect and strong. I might like a little prettier or feminine head, but she is certainly a powerful young lady.

2nd WINDWOOD’S SHE-DEVIL - This devil is a girl with heart. She is a medium sized young girl who gave a consistent performance throughout the class. A black and tan she presents a beautiful outline standing - a nice prosternum, elegant neck, good topline, good secondary sex characteristics. She has a pretty head with dark eyes and nice expression. Although she has a nice shoulder, I would like a bit more rear drive. She, however, performs consistently and willingly and this won her second place in this class.

3rd EJM N’EKO-LAN’S CELINE - This young lady got better and better as the class progressed. She is a dark eyed beauty with elegance and angles; once she is fully ring trained, she will be a real contender. Standing, she presents a beautiful outline with lovely curves. Her head is feminine with good expression. Although shorter in neck than my second place bitch, this youngster has an iron back that flows into a beautiful croup and tail set. This girl extends on both ends and she is clean both coming and going - a really pretty girl.

4th HEI-KOB’S GUARDIAN ANGEL - A lighter black and tan, this girl is a medium to large bitch. Although a bit leggy now, she will deepen in body with maturity, but she still presents a good outline while posed. She has a feminine head, dark eye and good bite. This girl is clean coming and going. She moves efficiently, but I would like to see a bit more rear drive.

German Shepherd Dogs, Futurity, Teenage Class Bitches

A beautiful class!!!!!

1st & Reserve Best Opposite In Futurity

CAMPAIGNER’S CUTE AS A BUTTON - We all search for the perfect name for our show dogs, and let me tell you, this little girl is verrrry appropriately named. She just begs to be noticed - those dark eyes - that inquisitive expression - that look at me “I am sooo cute” just can not be denied. And then, she takes a few steps!! My God, she can move too! This little girl has a lovely open shoulder that is complimented by a beautiful rear drive. She is very light on her feet with a defined moment of suspension. Clean coming and going, she projects that attitude of “Girls just want to have fun!” illustrating that she is still just a puppy at heart. She was an easy reserve, and had her performance been more consistent, she would have challenged the futurity winner more than she did.

2nd CHABLIS SHIMMER STYLISTIC - Another very lovely youngster, this girl radiates femininity. Shimmer was in beautiful condition, never took a bad step and her dark black coat really does reflect and shimmer in the bright sun. This girl presents an elegant outline both in motion and posed. Clean on both ends, she too has a lovely period of suspension, an open shoulder and good rear drive. She has a dark eye, good bite and lovely feminine head that flows into a long elegant neck. Personally I would prefer just a bit more bone, but this girl, like my reserve winner, will be going places in the future.

3rd DONKA’S THIRD TIMES THE CHARM - This black and tan girl has bone and substance. She presents a nice outline both standing and in motion. This girl has a lovely head with dark eye, excellent ear set and nice expression. What impressed me about her was her willingness to work; she has a good shoulder and rear drive. She holds a good topline in motion. She is a real nice one in a class of outstanding young ladies.

4th T-HO’S SHE DEVIL V CAJON - Another devil, a good one, in a class of nice young girls. This girl was very similar to my third place. Nice bone, lovely outline, clean coming and going, pretty headpiece, dark eye and good bite. There is, however, a bit more motion over the croup and loin than my third place. This girl should also finish easily.

German Shepherd Dogs, Futurity, Intermediate Class Bitches

Another quality filled class!!!

1st & Best Opposite In Futurity

MARQUIN’S DOUBLE TROUBLE - The pretty girl presented a go-go attitude from the start to finish of this class. She never took a bad step and got better and better as the class progressed. A black an tan, medium size bitch, Trouble holds a beautiful outline both standing and in motion. She is extremely pretty with dark eyes, a correct bite and ear set and lovely alert expression. Her coat, plush for this time of year, is in healthy, glowing condition. She has a well defined prosternum, high wither, good bone, tight feet and curves in all the right places. She is clean on both ends. This girl is extremely well trained and animated; she takes command of the ring and her performance, consistent throughout, earned her place as Best Opposite In Futurity.

2nd DONKA’S DREAM ON - Another really good bitch, this girl really challenged my first place. A darker black and tan of good substance, she too gave a very consistent performance. She has a lovely headpiece with a dark eye, good bite and nice expression. She presents a nice outline when posed and possesses a good strong back that levels a bit in motion. In motion she is balanced and correct, a really lovely youngster.

3rd MARYMIK’S PICTURE THIS V JOELLE - This young lady is a medium size black and tan also of good substance. She possesses a very balanced gait and tends to carry a more level back in motion. Her back is strong, but she tends to lift a bit in the rear when on a tight lead. She has dark eyes, nice expression and has a promising career ahead of her.

4th CLOVERLEIFE’S FIRECRACKER - Another nice black and tan of medium size, this girl and my third place are very similar. She too has substance and presents a beautiful outline standing and in motion. Her back is strong and she has a lovely head with dark eyes and a good ear set. A powerful mover she would perform better if she moved with less speed and was shown on a loose lead rather than a tight one.

German Shepherd Dogs, Futurity, Senior Class Bitches

1st REINEHAUS-MELANA FRONT PAIGE - This very plush black and tan presents a very pretty picture when posed , but definitely looks much better in motion when shown on a loose lead. Standing she has a well defined prosternum and a very curvy rear assembly. She has tiny hocks and tight feet. On a tight lead, however, she tends to break in the back a bit which I find distracting. She has a beautiful face with dark eyes and a nice ear est. She is clean coming and going. Above all, she is a willing worker who appears to really enjoy the show ring.

2nd TODOR MARQUIS ALL THAT JAZZ - This girl is a medium large young lady with an iron back. In motion or standing she gives the impression of substance and power. She is a powerful mover and opens well both front and rear. She has a lovely shoulder but tends to shorten up when on a tight lead. She too is a willing worker. She is clean going away but I would prefer her to be a bit cleaner coming at me.

3rd RODANS SISTER ACT II - My third place young lady is another very balanced youngster. A black and tan she holds a nice topline standing and in motion. She is clean coming and going and has a nice headpiece - another lovely young girl.

4th DEPAHL’S BOURBAN & GINGER - This young lady is a very nice black and reddish tan color. A balanced mover she has an iron back that has a bit of a cast to it. She has a dark eye and nice headpiece. Very pretty posed, she has a tendency to move a bit over the loin when in motion.

Maturity

German Shepherd Dogs, Maturity, Junior Class Dogs

1st & Reserve Best Opposite in Maturity

CODA’S MIRACLE IN THE MAKING - This handsome boy definitely presented the nicest picture standing or in motion in this class. A black and tan, he is a medium size boy who really fit the standard in a class of larger males. He has a good topline and gives the impression of power and substance without wasted motion. His back is short, strong and his croup flows into a nice saber tail. His headpiece is defined and he has a dark eye, good ear set and nice expression. In my opinion, he gave me the best outline and was the most correct dog in this class.

2nd DONKA’S KAHLUA - This is a larger black and tan male who performed better as the class progressed. This boy has a deep mature body and gives a nice outline when posed. In motion he moves with an open shoulder and a firm back. Although he drives beneath himself well, I would like to see a bit more follow through in the rear. His tail, however, creates a distraction when in motion. He has a good head with a dark eye, good ear est and alert expression.

3rd SIGNATURE’S ARMANI V KRIDLER - This boy is a really handsome black and tan, medium size dog. His outline, posed, is very pleasing and masculine. For a lighter tan dog he has a dark mask, dark eyes, good ear set and very alert expression. He has a nice shoulder. In motion he has a tendency to lift in front, but corrects as he settles into his gait. He could follow through a bit more in the rear and hold his tail better.

4th SAVARA’S VALOR V VON CHARISMA - Another very dark, masculine boy who is a medium-large dog. Another good headpiece - dark eyes, strong ears, alert expression. For a big boy he has a strong back. He extends well on both ends. He gives a pleasing masculine outline posed, but in motion, I found him to be a bit long in the loin and he could also hold his tail better.

German Shepherd Dogs, Maturity, Senior Class Dogs

1st & Best Opposite Sex In Maturity
TODOR K-HAUS DREAM KEEPER - This is a very handsome young boy who came to the ring in excellent condition and was shown on a loose lead throughout the class. There is much to be said about performance and training in the older classes. Standing, this medium to large male exhibits a strong back, well developed prosternum, substance and masculinity. He moves easily extending well on both ends, but tends to keep a more level back. He has a lovely open shoulder and is clean coming and going. His headpiece is all male - dark eye, very dark mask, strong muzzle, strong ears, nice alert expression. He could drive under himself a bit more, but his gait was effortless at a loose lead speed. His performance, above all, was consistent in this class and in the finals.

2nd FRANKENHAUS I’M A BELIEVER - My second place dog in this class was also very well trained and consistent in performance. He is a medium size black and reddish tan in excellent condition. A balanced mover, he has an iron back and a smooth stride. He is clean coming and going. He has nice expression, dark eyes and a good ear set - an attractive boy.

3rd ELITEDESIGN’S TINER CHANCE - Another nice black and tan male of medium size. When posed, he gives the impression of masculinity, substance and power. He has a lovely head with the same nice attributes as the first and second place males of this class. In motion this boy has a nice open shoulder, but appears to move a bit over the rear.

4th ELITEDESIGN’S COUSHATTA - A brother to number three, these two boys are very similar in appearance and motion. Nice black and tan, a little larger in body, nice headpiece, less wither and moves with a more level back than third place. Both, however, are nice young dogs.

German Shepherd Dogs, Maturity, Junior Class Bitches

Before I begin these next two classes, I must say that the quality in both classes was outstanding. Each bitch in the first four places, and indeed bitches that did not place, were beautiful representations of the breed. In all four places, these girls were clean on both ends so I will not reflect on this in my individual statements. I really wish that I could have given a few more plaques.

1st KISMET’S FAREWELL PARTY - Pretty, pretty, pretty! This girl took command of the class from the start and never let go. Impeccably groomed and trained, she never took a bad step. Party is black and a lighter tan bitch that gives the impression of substance even though she is small to medium size. Her profile when posed is a beautiful picture. She has a feminine head with a dark mask, dark eye, very correct ear set and an alert -look at me - expression. An elegant neck flows into an iron back; she has a good depth of body and a well defined prosternum. In motion she keeps a beautiful topline, drives under and follows through well. In the final analysis, she really gave the Best in Maturity and Reserve a tremendous challenge.

2nd STONECROFT’S PRIDE’S PERFECTION - Another outstanding bitch - she got better and better as the class progressed. A medium size, darker black and tan, this girl also presents a beautiful outline posed or in motion. She really wants to go and needs to settle down to really move fluidly, she, like my third place, moves much better on a loose lead. She is powerful in motion and opens well on both ends. She has a beautiful open shoulder and good rear drive and follow through. This girl has a very promising future.

3rd KENLYN’S BRITTANY YARMORK - Had this girl been more ring trained, she would have really challenged the ladies in front of her. A darker black and tan, medium size bitch, she is very pretty posed and reveals beautiful angles and curves. In motion she maintains a strong topline and opens on both ends . Indeed when she really gets down and stretches out, she can cover some serious ground. Unfortunately it took her some time to settle down and she needs to become consistent in her performance. This girl will go places!

4th LINDENHILL’S SURRENDOR DOROTHY - Another lovely lighter tan and black bitch who has real heart. Balanced and correct in proportions, she moves fluidly. She carries a good topline and shows with consistency and enthusiasm. She gives a good outline whether posed or in motion. She did not extend as much as the girl in front of her, but also has a good future.

German Shepherd Dogs, Maturity, Senior Class Bitches

1st & Best In Maturity

CH. ELITEDESIGN CHELSEY V TYRAN - This mature young lady could not be denied in this class and in the finals. A black and reddish blonde, medium-large size bitch that has it all. Posed, she presents a picture of substance - deep bodied, well defined prosternum, strong back, beautiful croup and tail set, excellent bone. I might like a little prettier head , but she has a dark eye and good ear set. In motion, however, she really rises above the crowd. This young lady moves close to the ground and kicks into gear. She has a beautiful open shoulder and really extends her forehand. In the rear she drives well beneath herself and follows through without any lift or wasted motion. She is both fluid and harmonious; qualities that do not change in her at any speed. It was my pleasure to be able to judge her!

2nd & Reserve Best In Maturity
CLOVERLEIFE’S DIMPLES - Another beautiful girl who really looks best shown on a loose lead. A medium size, dark black and tan girl that also gives the impression of power and substance. She has a lovely outline posed and in motion - feminine head, dark eye, good ear set - a strong back that flows into a lovely croup and tail set - a good shoulder and forehand - strong rear drive and good follow through - a deep mature body. In motion she has a good shoulder, but did not extend quite as much as the first girl. She also drives beneath herself and follows through without wasted motion. She too is very fluid and harmonious in motion, and again really shines on loose lead - on her own. We will be hearing more about this girl!

3rd BRADSHY LA UNA BONITA - This dark black and tan, medium size girl held a beautiful outline, posed or in motion . She is a feminine dark eyed girl with nice expression. She too looks best, as she was shown, on a loose lead and moves easily and fluidly around the ring. She has a strong back and keeps a good topline. In motion she gives the impression of balance and harmony. This girl is very pleasing to the eye.

4th WINSOME’S ABEARACADABERA - What a class, another beauty! This girl also presents a beautiful picture when posed. A dark black and tan, she is a medium size bitch with good bone and substance. She has a pretty, feminine headpiece - dark eye and nice ear set. She has a deep body and correct proportions. Although she has a slight cast to her back, it is strong and flows into a nice croup and tail set. In motion, she tends to kick up a bit in the rear, but overall, is a beautiful representation of the breed.
