WHY SHOULD YOU JOIN THE GERMAN SHEPHERD DOG CLUB OF AMERICA?

Congratulations on owning a German Shepherd Dog!  Some of the first things you brought home were food, a food and water bowl, and a collar….. And there’s one more thing you need to do for your best friend.  Join the German Shepherd dog Club of America (GSDCA).

If you are 18 or older and in good standing with the American Kennel Club (AKC), your next step is to learn more by joining the GSDCA.  We are the number one German Shepherd dog organization recognized b both the AKC and the World Union Organization of German Shepherd Dogs (WUSV).

The GSDCA members are diverse representatives of society joined together by a passion for the German Shepherd Dog.  We, as current members, would like to invite you to join us.  We tackle difficult health problems, debate structure of dogs, discuss upcoming events, share in the excitement of a new litter and comfort each other as a dog passes.  Each member contributes a unique insight so that the breed as a whole can move forward.  The GSDCA provides a venue that allows breeders, owners, handlers and judges to contribute freely any information relevant to the breed.  It is through a conglomeration of ideas that you, the new member, will formulate your plan for the betterment of the breed.

The purpose for which the German Shepherd Dog Club of America was formed in 1913 was, as stated in the first constitution and by-laws:

To encourage, promote, and improve the breeding of quality purebred German Shepherd Dogs, to educate the fancy, and to do all possible to bring the natural qualities of the German Shepherd Dog to perfection.
To urge members and breeders to accept that standard of the Breed, as approved by the American Kennel Club, as the only standard of excellence by which the German Shepherd Dog shall be judged.
To do all in its power to protect and advance the interests of the Breed by encouraging sportsman-like competition at dog shows, performance events, and tracking tests.
To aid with every possible means to demonstrate the German Shepherd Dog’s conspicuous ability to better serve mankind as a companion, war, Red Cross (now known as Search and Rescue), police, drug and explosive detection, security, herding, search and rescue dog, and guide dog for the blind.
To conduct shows, obedience trials, demonstrations, etc., under the rules of the American Kennel Club, where applicable, and
to publish literature and periodicals in the best interest of the German Shepherd Dog.

Since 1913, the GSDCA, Inc. members have dedicated themselves to fulfilling the above ideals.  Because of recent national events, the Red Cross Dog has become better known as the Search and Rescue Dog (SAR) and is earning its place in our nation’s history.

The Club, its members, and the member Regional Clubs support all phases of the abilities of the German shepherd Dog.  We hold obedience trials, herding tests and trials and agility trials.  We sponsor confirmation shows and tracking tests.  We have Schutzhund demonstrations under the auspices of the American Kennel Club.

We also support Search and Rescue training, German Shepherd Rescue activity and Therapy Dog training.

Canine health issues are handled in several manners.  One is through a separate entity, the American German Shepherd Dog Charitable Foundation, organized to fund health issue research.  Another way is through the Canine Health Foundation formed by the American Kennel Club.  The GSDCA was a founding member parent club in this organization.

WHAT DOES THE GERMAN SHEPHERD DOG CLUB OF AMERICA DO FOR YOU?

As a member, you will receive the magazine, THE GERMAN SHEPHERD DOG REVIEW, an award winning canine publication.
You will have the opportunity to sign the Breeders Code of Ethics, which is available only to active members.
The GSDCA sponsors a yearly National Specialty Show at which confirmation, obedience, tracking, herding and agility is presented along with a Schutzhund demonstration.  Also we have regional Futurity/Maturity shows that emphasize the breeders and their progeny.
Members are eligible for multiple awards in confirmation, obedience and performance events predicated on reaching certain levels of achievement in the different venues.
As a member, you will be part of the fight against breed specific legislation and Animal Rights groups that want to “one day…..put an end to the breeding and/or owning of dogs and cats.”  The GSDCA presently supports the American Dog Owners Association with funding and has also joined the American Kennel Club in some court cases.  In addition, through the regional clubs, we offer in some locations Public Education programs.  We need to do more in this field and urge old and new members to be more pro-active in this arena.
As a member, you have the opportunity to become involved in whatever field you choose and have a part in the continuation of the German Shepherd Dog as the great breed it is!

There are myriads of people who love the German Shepherd Dog and are looking for mentorship, friendship and a sense of belonging.  The GSDCA is the guild for this group.  It can provide the links to connect the fanciers to form a chain of support and common interest dedicated to the preservation of the breed we hold close to our hearts.

Join the German Shepherd Dog Club of America and help perpetuate the German Shepherd Dog as the dominant force in “SERVING AND PROTECTING MANKIND.”
