A Proud History
The German Shepherd’s police heritage dates back to the early 1900s in Germany, where the breed was developed by Captain Max von Stephanitz specifically for working ability. Their effectiveness was quickly recognized, and by the mid-20th century, German Shepherds had become the standard police dog in the United States and many other countries. Famous K-9s such as Rin Tin Tin helped popularize the breed, while thousands of lesser-known heroes have served silently protecting communities.Today, German Shepherds continue to serve in patrol, SWAT, airport security, border patrol, and federal agencies across the U.S.
The GSDCA’s Support
The German Shepherd Dog Club of America proudly supports the working heritage of the breed through education, events, and the SV Program. Many GSDCA members are actively involved in police K-9 programs as handlers, trainers, and breeders of high-quality working lines.
Whether you admire them from afar or are considering a German Shepherd for sport or service work, these remarkable dogs continue to prove why they remain one of the most trusted and capable breeds in law enforcement.
