The SV Program – Preserving the True German Shepherd

The SV Program (Schäferhund Verein) is the world’s most respected and comprehensive breeding and evaluation system for the German Shepherd Dog. Administered in the United States by the German Shepherd Dog Club of America (GSDCA) — the official AKC parent club and U.S. representative of the SV and World Union of Shepherd Dogs (WUSV) — the program upholds the breed’s original purpose as a versatile, intelligent, and reliable working dog.

What Makes the SV Program Unique?

While many registries focus primarily on appearance, the SV Program evaluates German Shepherds using a balanced approach that combines conformation (structure and breed type) with performance (working ability, drive, and character). The goal is to ensure that only dogs that meet high standards in both areas are recommended for breeding.Key elements of the SV Program include:
  • Breed Survey (Körung): A rigorous, multi-step evaluation that assesses a dog’s anatomy, movement, temperament, and genetic health. Only dogs that pass this survey receive a breeding classification (recommended or suitable for breeding).
  • Performance Testing (IGP/IPO): Dogs must demonstrate proficiency in tracking, obedience, and protection phases. This ensures they possess the courage, focus, and trainability that define the breed.
  • Conformation Shows: Dogs are judged against the official SV breed standard, which emphasizes a strong, balanced, and athletic build.
  • Health and Temperament Requirements: Hip and elbow certifications, along with stable, confident temperaments, are central to the program.
